A Devotional by Eric S. Reamer

Scripture: Luke 5:4 "When he had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.""

With the return of our weekly devotional, I would like to address an issue that is dear to my heart - that being the "deep" things of life.

If we look at the Scripture, I think we may just find something there that many people tend to overlook. You see, in the greater scope of this text, we find that Jesus advised Peter to go out to the deep water, let down his nets, and prepare for a catch...

Peter protested a bit, because he had just come in from a long, unproductive day of fishing, but he complied, because it was Jesus who was asking. The end of the story comes when we discover that Peter hauled in such a large amount of fish that his nets almost broke.

But let's look a little more in-depth to the passage listed for your consideration: Jesus said, "Put out into deep water..."

How often we tend to be satisfied with the "shallow" things of life - where we know that if we fall in, we'll be fine - it's shallow. Now, this applies to many facets of life, including, but not limited to our daily conversations, our emotional states, and yes, even our Christian walk.

When Jesus told Peter to "put out into deep water", consider the possibility that He (Jesus) was demonstrating the need for us to go beyond the obvious... He was indicating to Peter (and us) that there are certain times in life where we must go "deep" in order to get the real haul.

And, along with going deep, we must also prepare ourselves for the inevitable load that will follow. When people go "deep", wether with their interpersonal relationships, or otherwise, they will, no doubt encounter the fruit of that depth.

This can be a scary thing at times... we tend to prefer the safe waters of the shallow end. But the truth still applies... if we seek the profound things in life, we must be obedient, even as Peter was with the Lord, and put out into the "deep end".
