Passage: Exodus 22:21
"Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt."
Got your attention?? Good. Now we can down to business. Oh, and by the way, please understand - the graphics and suggested implications of this page are to be taken humorously only. Please don't think that I support the concept of "extra-terrestrial" life - I am a believer in the written Word of God - no additions, no subtractions. Now, what's all this about "aliens"?
Our text comes from Exodus, and it is but one of several "laws" set out for Moses to carry to the people. And, as you can see, David Ducovney was not even necessary to alert the people of how they should treat aliens. According to the Scripture, the JEWS were aliens LONG BEFORE the "X-Files" ever made it to prime time!
Okay, let's break it down. An "alien" is not a green, phosphorescent man with a huge head and long fingers, (that's Dennis Rodman), as the term generally connotates. Rather, the word means, "stranger", or "one who is not formally known". Come to think of it, these definitions probably support the theory of Dennis Rodman being an alien... but I digress.
The Word teaches us that we should not mistreat those who are different from ourselves. Rather, we should follow the example of the Lord. What *is* the example of the Lord? Oh I am so glad you asked! Let's read another passage!
Psalm 146:9 "The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked."
You see, God is Lord over everything... including the alien! He is Lord over all the people that we would consider different. He is Lord over those who, by whatever circumstance, have to deal with the loss of a loved one, or a father figure. So what does that mean to YOU?
Let's go even deeper. We live in a world where the walls that used to separate us are no longer barriers to our existence. With the rapidly changing, and ever-growing online global community, barriers such as language, creed, even race - are no longer barriers. If I wish to speak to a person in Latvia, or do business with a company in Asia, or if I just wish to get email from a friend in the U.K. - it's all possible. We don't focus on our differences - we focus on our common interests.
All that to say that things such as racism, and prejudice have never had a foot to stand on!! God is the Lord over all those who are different... and if God is taking care of them, certainly we should also be kind to them. Moses brought the Word of the Lord to the people, "Do not mistreat the alien..." So too, I bring the word to you... be kind to those that are different. Besides, you never know when it might be YOU that are in the minority - and if we but follow the Golden Rule, and do unto others as we would have them do unto us... life would be so much better!!
Think! I believe that if the majority of people would just take a moment to stop and think before making any type of judgment for any given scenario... so much hurt and conflict could be avoided! Take the time to think!
Prayer: Dear God, please help me to be more compassionate - more understanding - and less critical of those who are different from me. Help me to put on the mind of Christ, and shed the preconceived notions that tend to end up in hurt. Lord, please help me to, "be kind to the alien". In Jesus' name, Amen.
